Machine conversion, retrofitting and any kind of modernization of an existing machine will probably affect the machine’s safety circuits as well. A guide for this topic was developed with the support of the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. This guide allows for a generally recognized procedure for distinguishing what is classed as a significant modification.
We now assume that the following is clearly understood: Whenever a modification to the machine or its protective measures takes on a “significant” nature, legislation requires a new CE conformity process for the modified overall system. The question of whether a modification is significant follows from a decision graph with four decision levels. Decisions of an interpretative nature must be made at each step. Our experience helps customers make the decisions required for each level.
